  • RIP Tim McCarver

Very good catcher with the Cardinals winning 2 WS in 1964 and 1967. Played with a few other teams in MLB. After retiring he became an excellent game of the week analyst and made the Hall of Fame in the broadcasting section.

Now coming up to bat for the White Sox is the Mighty Mite, Nelson Fox.

Tim McCarver catching Bob Gibson, was part of what made me fall in love with baseball . those NBC Monday Night games, in the 60's, were gold for us . we would all cram into someone's house, to watch those games . many didn't like his color work, but I loved the guy . Rest in Peace buddy.

Rest in Peace Tim. Another player from the past that had a big impact on me when I was matriculating through Little League. Having to don the “Tools of Ignorance”, I never missed a chance to eyeball every nuance and technique he used behind the plate and at bat.

You got that right, Harwar. Those were can’t miss games back then.

I moved the posts from the celebrity R.I.P. thread here.

I think that leaves only two of the announcers from the Naked Gun still alive.

Before Johnny Bench came along Tim McCarver was the gold standard of NL Catchers in the 1960’s. I was amazed he played as long as he did after moving on to the Phillies. If I remember correctly he was Steve Carlton’s personal Catcher for much of that spell since he and Carlton knew each other well from their Cardinal days. The Phillies were pretty well stocked at Catcher in the 70’s with Bob Boone and Tim McCarver.

I enjoyed McCarver’s analysis in the booth as well. I still remember him calling out Aaron Rowand for a base running mistake in the World Series not going 1/2 way on a deep fly all to LF.
