Hmm. I always thought that "Hot Stove League" just referred to fans gathering around the potbelly stove at the general store during the off-season to talk about what was going on in baseball, both rumors and actual transactions, but okay.Nellie had more doubles than strikeouts every year from 1950 to 1963, and more triples (12) than strikeouts (11) in 1951 (682 plate appearances.) -

The Mets appear to be replacing one Cy Young winner with another.
After losing Jacob deGrom to the Rangers in free agency over the weekend, the Mets are reportedly reaching an agreement with another top free-agent arm in Justin Verlander, a source told MLB.com's Anthony DiComo. SNY's Andy Martino was the first to report the deal. Per MLB Network's Jon Heyman and others, the contract is for two years and $86 million, with a third-year vesting option.

It must be fun to be a fan of a team that sees it’s not quite talented enough to win it all, and goes and gets a major player or 2 to keep pushing.

1 or 2 players would not help the Sox get over the hump of the WS. Especially a guy who plays your "franchise's" position.Comment

Maybe among the list of available free agents this might be true, but I think the Sox would be an elite team if one could hypothetically take the present roster and add Shohei Ohtani to bolster the lineup and rotation, and Jose Altuve to play 2B and lead off.Comment

The second part would be funny to watch, with the reception Altuve gets each time he grabs a bat at Guaranteed Rate Field. As for Ohtani, he's probably going to break the bank when he is a free agent. I'm pretty certain the White Sox won't be bidding for his services.Comment

The Phillies got their star shortstop, agreeing to an 11-year, $300 million deal with Trea Turner on Monday, a source told MLB.com's Mark Feinsand. The team has not confirmed the deal, which per Feinsand includes a full no-trade clause.
The free-agent shortstop market was loaded this offseason, but it’s difficult to find a player at the premier position who has accomplished more than Turner over the past few seasons.
Since becoming a full-time starter with the Nationals in 2018, Turner has established himself as one of the top hitting shortstops in the Majors. During that span, Turner is the only player in baseball with more than 90 homers and 140 stolen bases. He helped the Nationals win their first World Series in franchise history in ‘19.

Perhaps. If they aren't able to bring leadership to the clubhouse, and get some of the Sox' own roster problems to shape up, the could spend a billion dollars this offseason and it won't matter a bit if you get similar results from 3B, SS, C, CF and LF.👍 1Comment

After missing the 2021 season with Tommy John surgery and spending 2022 with the Dodgers, Tommy Kahnle is headed back to the franchise that originally drafted him in 2010. The right-handed reliever has agreed to a two-year deal with the Yankees worth $11.5 million, a source told MLB.com’s Mark Feinsand on Tuesday. The club has not confirmed the deal.Comment
