  • Bill Freehan R.I.P...

Very good, overlooked Tigers catcher from the 1960's and 1970's:

RIP Bill. I remember when I was a kid always being thrilled when I opened a pack of Topps and getting a Bill Freehan card. Before Fisk and Munson came along, Bill was the preeminent Catcher in the American League.

I have an early childhood memory of witnessing Bill Freehan hitting his first major league home run on our black and white TV in Pontiac, Il. It was the CBS Game of the Week with Dizzy Dean and Pee Wee Reese, probably against the Yankees as they were featured pretty much every week. Don't know if that is true or if I dreamed it up...

And two home runs to boot, thanks Fielder. A number of interesting names from back in the day in that box score including several ex-Sox.
