I think it's actually a three way tie now between New York, Boston and Oakland for the two wild card spots. The way Boston is dropping its a pretty good bet they'll be on the outside looking in.

UPDATE: On the MLB.com standings page they have the three teams tied for the wild card spots.

Yankees technically ahead percentagewise with one fewer loss.

8/19 update: Yankees win their 7th in a row. Tampa completes sweep of the lowly Orioles, who have now lost 15 straight. Oakland's win puts them in the 2nd wild card spot over Boston, while Seattle completes their sweep of the Rangers. Astros salvage one in KC, face the Mariners next.

8/20 update: Yankees win 8th straight, continuing their dominance of the Twins (last time the Yankees lost the season series with the Twins was in 2001). Red Sox, happy to get out of the Bronx, wallop the Rangers, while the Jays drop their third straight at home to the Tigers in 10. Mariners find Houston much less hospitable than Arlington, while the A's come home and take the first in the series with their cross-Bay rivals.

8/21 update: Yankees keep rolling with their 9th straight win. Red Sox get pounded at home, while Toronto breaks their losing streak, shutting out the Tigers. Houston humiliates Seattle at home, while the A's blew a lead late and drop one to the Giants.

The Yankees are the scariest team at the moment. They appeared all but dead a month or two ago but came alive in a big way. However, things change and teams get hot and then get cold. Playoff outcomes are WAG at this time.

They were aggressive as usual at the deadline and surprisingly the starting pitching has turned out very well for them.

8/22 update: Yankees and Red Sox both rained out. As both teams were playing non-division opponents and these were the last games of the series, who knows when the makeup games will be played. Jays lose at home to Tigers, as Cabrera joins the 500-HR club. Mariners salvage one at Houston. A's blow another lead late to drop the rubber match to their cross-Bay rivals.

8/23 update: Yankees win their 10th straight, taking out the Braves while the Red Sox needed 11 to down the Rangers in the make-up game. Kansas City seems to have the formula to beat the Astros, as they've now taken 4 of 5 from the AL West leaders, while the A's drop their third straight at home, this time to the closing Mariners (not good news for the A's ahead of a huge weekend series with the Yankees coming to the Bay Area for 4).
