  • RIP Mary Francis Veeck

RIP to the lovely Mary Frances Veeck.

I'm sure she was a wonderful woman. And at 102, she lived a full life and then some.

One of her contributions to the White Sox was designing those awful pajama-like unis the team wore in the mid-70s. They were comfortable, I'm sure, but hideous to look at and they made the Sox the laughing stock of the league until they quietly dumped them for a more conventional looking uniform.

Regardless of this misstep when it came to baseball fashion, may she rest in peace.

To be honest, I hated the uniform she designed, but after giving it a moment’s thought, I thought they were cool to wear during America’s Bicentennial celebration, and after seeing how they were a tip of the hat to the franchise’s beginnings I hated them a little less. It took a couple more uniform changes after that to get back to the “normal” look of the Old English S-O-X that we know and love. But since this thread is about Mary Frances Veeck I post this picture and say, hey those unit’s aren’t so bad. 😀

One of the first things I remember about her was a Monday-Friday 15 minute TV show that Bill and her hosted in 1959 right before the evening news as they talked about the previous game and games coming up, I'm pretty sure it was on WGN. She knew her baseball except when it came to designing baseball uniforms.
Now coming up to bat for the White Sox is the Mighty Mite, Nelson Fox.

She was lucky Chris Sale wasn't around then.
Ah, you can't beat fun at the old ball park.

She also hosted a radio show on the weekends during the 1970's. I think it was on WMAQ. I remember her interview of [Sox 3B] Junior Moore as a highlight.

There was also a TV show during Veeck's second stint as owner. It might have been called "Mary Francis and Friend" or something like that. Jimmy Piersall was once on the show and made some kind of snarky remark about "horny broads" that didn't win him any popularity contests.

And he was referring to ballplayers' wives.
Nellie had more doubles than strikeouts every year from 1950 to 1963, and more triples (12) than strikeouts (11) in 1951 (682 plate appearances.)
