While watching the Rays game today the announcers were talking about left handed catchers and DeWayne Staats brought up Mike Squires who many of us remember as a great fielding first base who won a Gold Glove but did fill in as catcher a few times in emergency situations. While doing some research on Squires I came across this amazing stat which I can't remember back in his time with the Sox anyone bringing up. In 1982, 83 and 84 in games that Squires played the Sox record was 242-120 for a .669 winning percentage, in games he did not play in the Sox were 18-106 for a .145 winning percentage. The difference in the winning percentage and losing percentage of .524 is the highest in ML history for any player, again simply amazing.

That stat on winning pct is impressive but it’s also misleading. Many times Mike was put in the game late, as a defensive replacement when the Sox had the lead and we’re looking to protect it.
Now I’ve often wondered what Scott Fletcher’s all time winning percentage was. It seemed he played on mostly winning teams, and his defense was a major contributing factor to all the winning games he played on in Chicago and Texas, and his second go around with the Sox.
