  • *OFFICIAL* 7/20/21 Tony’s Boys Don’t Quit, Either SOX 9 MIN 5 Postgamer

Big blasts are helpful to overcome bad bullpens. Thankfully Minnesota’s bullpen was worse tonight.

Cleveland loses; the Sox now lead the division by 9.5 games.

What an insane 8th inning. Losing the DH, Engel somehow dodging that tag, Billy Hamilton with the game-winning hit. Magic number is 60.

The .611 winning percentage extrapolates to 99 wins.

8-2 in their last 10 means they are the hottest team in the majors.

9.5 game division lead is the best in the majors.

Only the Dodgers and Astros have a better run differential.

5th time this year Sox trailed in the 7th inning or later and won.

Any questions folks? Anyone thinks this bullpen can be depended on come October?

Anybody? Step right up friends and neighbors.

This is a BAD bullpen, period and it could cost them dearly when it really matters.

I suspect that the showing since the Sunday Baltimore game that Mr. Hahn is convinced he needs to pull some triggers and get some guys who can actually get people out because right now they only have two or three guys who can do that.

Seriously, does nothing make you happy? Is the comeback win actually less important to you than temporarily surrendering the lead? I feel like this could have been Game 7 of the World Series, and you'd still find a way to be critical of this team.

Lip, I agree we need better relief pitching.

However, it’s also fair to say that Minnesota has Burr’s number. He hasn’t surrendered any other runs this season; all four of his earned runs have been scored by the Twins. He’s only allowed two total hits to teams besides the Twins. It’s just a fluke. I’m not saying he’s a legit 8th inning guy, but I’m also not ruling him out against other teams.

Most bullpens are iffy at best. Ours is no exception.

I think at this point the team’s resources (money, tradeable assets, whatever) would be better spent shoring up the bullpen rather than second base or a right fielder. The guys they’ve got out there are getting the job done pretty consistently. The bullpen, not so much.

I think we can improve both the bullpen and second base with one shopping trip to Pittsburgh.

They were only down 1 run. Not some epic comeback. But that's another reason why the team is so good - the pitching sucked much of the night, but they were only down 1.
It's also nice not to have a team full of stone-feet. They can run the bases, and sensibly.
Cleveland looks like it's about to call it a season; all about getting ready for October.

Way to suck the oxygen out of the room...

Sox win another thrilling comeback victory, Abrreu and Moncada are heating up big time just as the team gets ready to get healthy. Kopech appears to be turning into exactly the guy we need him to be - a multi-inning eating strikeout machine, so of course the Sox doomed...

Well I'm happy even if others are failing to see and feel the joy.

(we're gonna need a bigger banana soon...)
Riding Shotgun on the Sox Bandwagon since before there was an Internet...

They have eyes but refuse to see.

The Sox goal right now isn't just to make the playoffs and get beat in the first round. They have said from day one the goal is to get to the World Series...fair enough.

Unless the bullpen gets straightened out they may not even get there. Voodoo they won't be playing the rancid Royals, terrible Twins or Triple A Tigers (who I think are just five under now; kudos to them) come October.

You've got Hendriks, Kopech and............................................... ................................... Moe? Larry?? Curly???

The comeback win IS less important because THEY SHOULDN'T HAVE SURRENDERED the lead in the first place.

I'm amazed that is so difficult for you to understand. How many blown leads is it going to take Thomas? Give me a number please and I'll adjust my expectations.

If this happens in October and they don't come back I'll be looking forward to reading your comments.

Frater: Fair enough, excellent points. Burr to me is another mop-up man who shouldn't be sniffing game situations but at least right now it's not like TLR has a ton of options so I have to cut him some slack decision-wise.

Always appreciate your good insights even if I don't always agree with them!

I don't disagree that the bullpen needs help. I also don't disagree that it's coughed up its fair share of games. However, as the old Grinder Rule states, only one statistic matters: W. And right now, they have quite a few of them and are in very good shape. Having mostly been starved of winning baseball for over a decade, I am going to enjoy every win that comes in exciting fashion. If you're going to treat a comeback win as a loss, that's on you, not me or anyone else.
