Delmonico is hitting in the 6th spot between Eloy and Robert today.

Yes, because clearly moving him up in the order will be better for the lineup. <eyeroll>

So we hear how Grandal’s framing is a big attraction for Keuchel, and Grandal opens by pitching to McCann?

McCann got so much credit ladt year for Giolito’s turnaround, and Giolito threw to Grandal yesterday?

        This is some head-scratching stuff.

Day game after a night game it's very common to rest the catcher who started the night before.

So if you know you’re going to start them both the first two games why not reverse it?

              Exactly. Not rocket science.

Opening night you start the best players you have. That's just standard stuff for all sports. There's an emotional component to managing and that's part of it.

Come on... this is basic stuff. I understand the nitpicking but you guys are overthinking this.

Then why did Delmonico and Leury start?

I get that Grandal was the big FA acquisition, but Keuchel was a big acquisition too — one with a Cy Young award on his resume. If you were determined to go Grandal-McCann then you should have gone Keuchel-Giolito so that both pitchers could work with their preferred receivers.

Or you just start Grandal both days and give McCann the Sunday start.

Normally I agree but I think there’s an argument to be made in a 60 games season. And I’m not sure why Grandal can’t start back to back games to start a 60 games season when he’s had 200+ days off.

I'm not going to keep beating my head against the walls if you are going to be willfully obtuse on this subject. You know these answers.

Leury was the best available option for 2B on the current roster. (not arguing whether he should have been the best option, merely that he was the best option)

Delmonico started because Mazara is out and they wanted another LH bat in the lineup.

Again, you're not going to start Grandal back to back on night game followed by a day game (we've already discussed this).

The team wanted to give Giolito the opening night start and they were right to do so. He earned it last year. Again, this is part of managing emotions and player expectations, something the raw stats in no way allow for.

None of this is in ANY way hard to figure out if you don't have an agenda you want to promote. You do, so I will bow out of this discussion.

Sorry, it’s up to Renteria to decide who plays and to put his players in a position to win. The best managers win, and then the catering to egos becomes unnecessary.

Giolito deserved the Opening Day start. So did McCann, who was an All-Star for the Sox last year and who caught Giolito every game.

Much was made over the offseason about how much Grandal’s framing, at the bottom of the zone, would help Keuchel. Keuchel himself gave that as a reason for signing here.

You can only have one OD starting pitcher and one OD starting catcher. You also know you’ve got a day game following a night game, and will probably switch backstops for game 2. Why not go with the best batteries instead of the best players?

In hindsight, neither Giolito nor Grandal were good.

Fortunately for Ricky, both Keuchel and McCann have been good, but a lot of that has to do with the big strike zone.
