    Typical Reinsdorf.

I guess one of the spring training story lines (if and when spring training actually happens) will be the “open competition” for the fifth starter spot between Lopez, Rodon, and Kopech. In all likelihood, Kopech will look good but be sent to Charlotte “to build up arm strength” but also for the team to claw back some of his service time. Expect both Lopez and Rodon to make the team, with one of them starting and one of them in long relief. Meh.

I'll say hi to Carlos when I go to the hospital to get vaccinated. Maybe I'll even get to autograph his cast.

I mean, I don't hate this. But he doesn't provide a sure amount of innings. The hope I guess is that he is finally healthy, he was pumping velo at the end of the year. Will be interesting if Katz can tweak his mechanics enough to get mores strikes out of him.

Damnit. Really? Why waste that kind of cash when we can get the same production for the league min.?

Perhaps he's being groomed for some kind of coaching position.

Another example of the Sox "penny saved, pound foolish" philosophy.

I find it incredibly hard to believe he’d make anything remotely close to 3 mil on any other ball club. Didn’t we see enough of him last year to know that he doesn’t have it anymore?

He was hitting 95 on the radar gun in his stint with the team.

I’m not sure if Nightengale thinks that Carlos Rodon is Hector Rodon or Alex Colome. Either way he deserves to get roasted for this.

$3M is actually exactly what I expected the deal to be for. SPs don't typically get less than that, even for a reclamation project.

This was always a possibility, I just expected the Sox would look for a safer bet for this role. Having Lopez and Rodon battle for the 5th starter spot is better than 1-2 years ago when we were counting on them to be 1 and 2 in the rotation, so there's that. Obviously the big question with Rodon is health - both whether he is going to be available, and whether it can explain away his poor performance when he did pitch last year. I guess no team knows more about Rodon's history and his current health than the Sox, and I find it hard to believe that they would give him $3M if they expect him to miss a lot of time, especially when money is (reportedly) so tight. But they've done stupid things before so .

It's possible the team thinks his struggles in 2020 were due to getting hurt in his first start and then trying to rush back too quickly? They obviously don't believe he was an 8.22 ERA guy. FWIW his FIP was only 4.89, which might be more reflective of how he actually pitched than the ERA over such a small sample (7 innings).
