  • 2021 MLB draft

The draft is about 7 weeks away. Sox Machine's latest write-up is a high level summary of other mock drafts: https://www.soxmachine.com/2021/05/2...ill-prominent/

Adrian Del Castillo is someone that intrigues me.

Dropping college guys are expected, but the prep class is where most of the later round hits happen. Highest upside player possible, and the HS class may be the right spot to fill that desire.

There could be a lot of arms sitting there for the pickin'. Chase Petty is so boom or bust, but I love his arm.

First mock draft out at MLB.com. Here is who they have the Sox selecting:

          22. White Sox: Jud Fabian, OF, Florida
Fabian might be the toughest guy to place now as he righted the ship for a while, then had a very rough weekend against Arkansas (1-for-11, 9 strikeouts) and didn’t do much in conference tournament play, but the tools are still legit.

            C - Joe Mack

Reading up on him online the thought is his ceiling is a slightly above average catcher in the MLB. I'd take that. Decent catchers will all around game are often hard to find. One person compared him to Joe Mauer but, come on....

Please, no high-schoolers in the first round.

Considering our position in the draft and on the field, I don't think there's been a more opportune time to swing for the fences on a prepster.

But also let me be clear, if there is ANY player we think can play this year at 21, take that shot. I’m very on board with collegiate pitchers. Most of the mature older bats are gone by that range, right? Curious to see where all the 21 year olds go with some contenders picking before us.

                    Latest projection:

                    22. White Sox: Colson Montgomery, 3B, Southridge HS (Huntingburg, Ind.)
The White Sox are targeting several high school bats, including Montgomery, Mack, Arizona third baseman Wes Kath, California shortstop Max Muncy and Louisiana second baseman Peyton Stovall.

Law's new mock also has them taking Montgomery.

When it comes to mock drafts, I tend to ignore them (in all sports) because there is no indication what the guesses are based on. Would be nice if there was a webstie that had all the mock drafts and the actual drafts side-by-side to see how accurate all those click-bait crystal balls were.

It's one thing to say "these prospects will help the team" versus "they will probably pick this kid, but I don't want to say how I know this because it is either pure speculation on my part, or propaganda from the team to influence the teams picking ahead of us."

I few different analysts have been saying that the Sox are being linked to prep position players. I don't think they would do that unless there was some smoke behind it, especially since it's been like a decade or something since the Sox have drafted a high schooler in the first round.

With Grandal's injury and age and the fact that Collins looks like the only real option the Sox may want to consider taking the best available catcher prospect out there when they draft with their first round selection. They need some depth here in the system.
