FWIW, texted my buddy who gets to watch ASU baseball regularly. He really likes Coffey. Said he could move fast as a relief prospect. Picked up some nice MPH as he filled out his frame in college. Maybe they like his fresh arms and intend to stretch him out and have him in a rotation, but it would be nice to have more RPs to watch in the minors

What makes you say that? I think the Crochet deal was inked knowing the exact # to get Kelley in the fold. There’s so many details and perks to work in that it takes a while with the prepsters, though.

If I'm a HS kid I don't see how I turn down $3M. No guarantees how things go the next 3-4 years in college. Take the money now and if you're smart with it, you're set for life regardless of what else happens.

Yeah, good parents will squirrel all that money away for him and he can buy whatever education he wants if he chooses when he grows up.

And in the mean time he'll be chasing his dream and working with some of the best coaches available to make that happen surrounded by people with a similar dream and if everything goes well he'll make more money than he could ever dream of or spend in 100 lifetimes.

On the other hand, Mick Abel just signed for over $4M and he didn't even pitch in 2020. Let's hope they really did have a clear agreement before the draft and it didn't promise Kelley the biggest bonus paid to a high school pitcher...

If it's about that then he isn't signing. He's probably open to signing, and whether it's $3 million or $4 million it doesn't matter. The bigger issue is whether he wants to follow his dream of leading UT to a championship before going to the bigs. It's a legitimate pull for this kid.

Either way, it was worth the risk for the Sox. If he doesn't sign, we get that same draft position next year.

The only way Kelley isn’t signing with the Sox is if he (or his agent) flat out lied to Hahn. There is no way the Sox would draft him and rearrange their next 3 picks to clear out space unless they knew exactly what it would take to sign him. The deal was probably made the night before the draft. I get the tendency to mistrust the Sox front office but they’re typically very good at signing guys. There’s really nothing to worry about here.
