Our Sox selected Garret Crochet, LHP from Tennessee in the first round last night. Hard-throwing lefty with perhaps the best stuff in the draft according to the usual suspects. He was available for the Sox due to slight injury concern (missed time this year with sore shoulder, but then pitched 3.1 innings against Wright State). Video of him training recently had him at 100 MPH. Great fastball and slider combo, with developing change. Not a long history of starting, but Sox view him as a starter. Chris Sale comps were thrown out on TV due to similarities in delivery and stuff. Big difference right now is Sale had much more experience in the rotation when drafted.

Big takeaway is that after 5 rounds, any amateur you sign is capped with a 20K signing bonus. No limit on number of players signed. A forward thinking team could load up if they weather the lack of revenue.

This is ultimately going to cost the sport a number of players who would've been drafted late, but made it to the majors. Plus a few middle-of-the-draft-type guys might elect to just play another sport since $20K is nowhere near what they would normally receive to sign.

1. This really screws over teams like the Royals and Tigers who are in "stock-up" mode right now with their rebuilds (poor babies....). Signing all the undrafted free agents will be easier said than done because many of the high school seniors and college kids with eligibility left will want to play another year ion hope that they can get drafted next year for a higher bonus payday.
2. IIRC, there will be only 10 rounds in 2021 and 20 in 2022 going forward from there. No more Mark Buehrles...….

This isn't going to hurt prospects at all. There are some good prospects taken after the fifth round, players on the radar for multiple teams. Any player eligible for the draft who isn't taken in the first five rounds ends up being able to negotiate with multiple teams, essentially becomes an amateur free agent. It was a very long time ago, but for illustrative purposes take LaMarr Hoyt, drafted in the fifth round in 1973. He was being scouted by five teams at five positions out of high school. He only knew he was drafted as a pitcher when he learned that he was drafted by the Yankees. In a five-round draft, he would have been better off (from an immediate monetary standpoint anyway) if he hadn't been drafted at all. Obviously, the other teams scouting Hoyt didn't think highly enough to draft him earlier. But if he hadn't been drafted, the Yankees could have had to deal with competition with four other teams in order to sign him.

It's not like they can give these guys a Sale deal, either, as those guys drafted past there most certainly aren't good enough for early call ups.Riding Shotgun on the Sox Bandwagon since before there was an Internet...
